FACE FIT TESTING ADVISORY NOTICE

Face fit testing is a legal requirement under regulation 7 of COSHH, guidance given through HSG53 and INDG479.

The employer has a legal responsibility to provide the correct RPE to protect his employees.  In order to do this the employer must confirm that a mask is protecting the employee via a face fit test.

The qualitative face fit test is a series of movements conducted whilst exposed to a bitter or sweet testing agent. The employee should not be able to taste these during the test.  If they are able to it means that the mask is not protecting the employee from harmful fumes. The mask is then adjusted or replaced by a different model.

Each employee must be clean shaven and the test takes around 30-45 minutes.  Upon completion of the test the employee will be informed which mask they require and issued a certificate advising that they have passed the test.

Failure to protect employees from harmful substances can result in development of serious lung conditions such as COPD, occupational asthma and cancer.

The Health and safety executive are able to issue fines and sanctions if employees have not been tested and certificated.
